Garden blogging

Your garden photos may reveal where you live

Most phone cameras can save the exact place a photo was taken inside the image file. Post that original file on your garden blog and anyone who downloads it may be able to read your home location.

What is hidden in a photo

Photos carry metadata, often called EXIF data: the date and time, the camera model and settings, and, if location was on, GPS coordinates. Apple's support guide notes that people you share a photo with may be able to see its location data.

How to remove or stop location data

  • On iPhone and Mac, Apple's guide explains how to remove location from photos you have taken, how to turn location off in the share options, and how to stop the Camera from recording location in Settings.
• On Android, camera apps usually have a location setting; turn it off, and check sharing options for removing location.
  • On a computer, many photo editors can remove metadata when you export or 'save for web'.
  • Many blogging platforms strip some metadata on upload, but do not rely on it; check with a free online metadata viewer.

Other things photos reveal

  • House numbers, street signs and car plates in the background.
  • Faces of neighbors or children; ask before posting.
  • Routines, such as when you are away. Consider posting trip photos after you return.

Make photos better too

While you are editing, resize photos to the width your blog shows and give them descriptive file names and alt text. Smaller files load faster for readers.
